For My Daughter

forty-five years have passed like a dream.
It is a wonder that we are still here, together.

Sarah’s Reply

I’m filled with wonder and gratitude
And love and friendship
That we are here in this moment
together.

Happy 14th Birthday Will, 2017 Memory

Maddie is fifteen months. Will is five years old. In my daughter’s den, lives a gigantic, empty box. My grandson hides inside. Perched outside the box, Maddie wonders where her brother is when he pops up like a jack in the box. She bursts into high pitched giggles pinging on the lights. Will, loving her response, is on repeat.

Ten years later: We’re in Palm Beach, lounging at the pool. Maddie and Will are in the water playing catch, she at one end, he the other. Their big sister, Izzy, her swan-like beauty rests on a lounge chair working on a tan.

Now, Maddie throws the football.

Now Will catches it, runs with it, chiming touch down,
touch down
till he reaches the other side and I bless his imaginary win.
