Flutter into Fall
Join the annual celebration of beloved butterflies as the monarchs begin their migration! Flutter into Fall features activities for all ages to honor the fluttering friends and their annual migration to the Oyamel fir forest in Mexico. Take part in a craft presented by the National Museum of Mexican Art, join an entomologist for monarch butterfly tagging, explore the outdoor butterfly garden and nature trails, sketch pollinators and flowers with featured artist Tara Preston, see a special performance by Xochitl-Quetzal Aztec Dance company, and witness the daily release of newly emerged tropical butterflies into the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven inside the museum.
Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism
Immerse yourself in the bold and innovative work of Mary Cassatt with this gathering of 75 experimental and ambitious works made at the height of her career. Marking the centennial of her death, Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism celebrates the artist’s paintings, pastels, and prints from a period when she took her art in new directions.
Red Line Jazz Project
Mandala South Asian Performing Arts continues its community-building Red Line Jazz Project, a public arts initiative activating public transit and community spaces with free live music and cultural programming. These final free performances feature the brass band Windy City Ramblers, a second-line brass collective dedicated to inspiring youth and uplifting communities through music and culture. Led by Co-Founder and CEO Mario Abney, Windy City Ramblers brings the heartbeat of second-line tradition to the Chicago area, fostering creativity, cultural pride, and community connection.

Genealogy 101: An Introduction to Genealogical Research at the Newberry
In this informal orientation, Newberry reference librarians introduce you to the Newberry’s genealogy and local history collections. Aimed at researchers new to the library and/or new to genealogical research, the session covers basic principles of building a family tree, genealogy collection strengths, and effective search strategies. Following the orientation, you’re welcome to stick around for a guided tour of the library. No registration required.
Scandinavian Day
Considered one of Illinois’ most unique Scandinavian celebrations, the festival gives visitors a chance to experience the cultures of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden all in one place. Come for traditional Scandinavian foods like Swedish meatballs, æbleskiver, and kringle; folk dancers and live entertainment; Scandinavian artisans and vendors; cultural experiences; family activities; and even Vikings bringing Nordic history to life. Families can also enjoy complimentary children’s activities including pony rides, face painting, crafts, and the park’s playground.

Join the team behind Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculptures from the Torlonia Collection as they pull back the curtain on the planning process behind gallery labels, audio tours, and digital content for the show.
70th Annual Gold Coast Fashion Show
Fashion and philanthropy merge as the Children’s Service Board celebrates the 70th annual Gold Coast Fashion Show. Cutting-edge fashion is presented in two fast-paced, live runway shows at a luncheon on September 17 at The Drake Hotel and an evening cocktail reception on September 24 at the Geraghty. Funds raised will benefit the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
Rare Map and Book Fair
The Newberry Library hosts a rare map and book fair in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Map Society. Programming includes workshops on crafting with maps, speakers on topics including Kevin Mason on the history of maps of Iowa, and a guided tour of maps chosen by charter members of the Map Society. At least a dozen vendors from across the country will showcase rare books, atlases, and related works on paper.

The Formosa Quartet Kicks Off Music Institute’s 2026–27 Season
Opening the Music Institute of Chicago’s 2026–27 Nichols Concert Hall Presents season is the Formosa Quartet, winner of both the First Prize and Amadeus Prize at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. The program features Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5 and a Formosa Quartet Set — an assortment of shorts from the ensemble’s collection of folk, pop, jazz, and poetry arrangements.

Jlin + Third Coast Percussion, Vernacular
Third Coast Percussion presents a new original program, Vernacular, in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize finalist and electronic music artist Jlin. TCP and Jlin will perform live on stage together in brand new arrangements of some of Jlin’s most exciting works reimagined for live electronics and acoustic percussion quartet, as well as new works composed specifically for the occasion.
Fareed Haque Leads Red Line Jazz Festival
Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, working with Artist-in-Residence and acclaimed jazz guitarist Fareed Haque, presents the Red Line Jazz Festival, an evening of music and dance. This multifaceted performance serves as the capstone concert of the community-building Red Line Jazz Project, a five-month public arts initiative that has been activating public transit and community spaces with free live music and cultural programming.

For nine years, Artists in Public Schools has partnered with professional artists, students, and educators to create and share powerful stories through art. This year’s theme, Art Means Something, reflects the heart of that work.
TCP Fall Benefit
Third Coast Percussion offers an intimate evening of cocktails, conversation, music, and celebration with special guest Jlin, Pulitzer Prize-finalist composer, performer, and electronic musician. The Benefit features an exclusive conversation with the artists about their creative process and ongoing collaboration, and a dynamic performance of works from their upcoming album Vernacular. TCP will also present the Resonance Award to James Ginsburg, Founder and President of Cedille Records, for his work promoting more than 180 classical musicians and ensembles from Chicago to listeners worldwide.
12th Annual Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade
LUMA8 presents the 12th Annual Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade, a family-friendly event featuring unique floats, spectacle puppets, and all forms of creative performance. Due to the growth of the parade, Arts in the Dark triumphantly returns to its original larger location along Columbus Drive, with the parade stepping off at Balbo Drive and marching north through Jackson Boulevard. This magical evening procession celebrates Halloween as the “artist’s holiday” and draws together participants from major cultural organizations, inspiring youth programs, and aspiring artists from every ward of Chicago.
A Revolution of Values — Veteran Art Triennial and Summit
The Elmhurst Art Museum presents A Revolution of Values, a group exhibition as part of the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial and Summit, Resisting the Long War, organized by the Chicago-based Emerging Veteran Art Movement. Building on the legacy of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, this exhibition brings together nearly a dozen local, national, and international artists whose work examines military experience and critiques militarism. The exhibition will be on view September 12, 2026 through January 3, 2027.
Fur Ball
The PAWS Chicago Fur Ball is Chicago’s premier pet-friendly black tie event! Set at the legendary Drake Hotel, this unique gala invites guests to dress their pets in four-legged formal wear and walk the red carpet for an exciting celebration to benefit PAWS Chicago. Allendale Youth Board Polar Plunge
Take the plunge in Lake Michigan, challenge yourself in the stair climbing competition, or cheer from the shore at Allendale Youth Board’s 2nd Annual Polar Plunge. Tickets are $25 and participants are encouraged to invite friends and family to sponsor their plunge or climb. All proceeds benefit Allendale in Lake Villa, a school and residence supporting the behavioral, emotional, and mental health needs of some of Illinois’s most vulnerable children.
75th Annual Children’s Research Fund Children’s Ball
The 2026 Children’s Ball is the signature fundraising event of the Children’s Research Fund at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. This black-tie gala brings together philanthropic leaders for an inspiring evening dedicated to advancing pediatric research. Funds raised support the Children’s Research Fund’s commitment to Advanced Therapeutics at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute, accelerating innovative treatments and transformative discoveries for children in Chicago and beyond.
